CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER


Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy (www.fsha.org) is seeking nominations and applications for a full-time Chief Development Officer. Reporting directly to the President, the Chief Development Officer is responsible for advancing the mission of the Academy by identifying, attracting, and securing non-tuition revenue in support of the goals of the school.  The CDO will also be responsible for the supervision of the Director of Special Events, Director of Annual Fund (Flintridge Fund), Development Office Manager, Director of Marketing and Design (Communications Associate), Development Data Manager, Major Gifts Officer and Campaign staff. 

 

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy was founded by the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose in 1931.  The school’s original Mission-style buildings, designed in 1927 as a resort hotel by noted Southern California architect Myron Hunt, overlook the San Gabriel Valley and the Pasadena Rose Bowl from the crest of the scenic San Rafael Hills.  Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy is a Catholic, Dominican, college-preparatory day and boarding high school for girls in the hills of La Canada Flintridge serving Los Angeles and Southern California.  They educate young women for a life of faith, integrity and truth. 

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Serves as a member of the Academy Administration, the senior management team of the school.
  • Works in collaboration with the Admissions Director to maintain image, set direction and refine marketing outreach to external constituencies.
  • Serves as staff for the Board of Directors to report updates on fundraising and other strategic initiatives.
  • Serves as staff for the Development and Marketing Committee of the Board to coordinate the fundraising directions and efforts. 

Oversees the accomplishment of the following:

  • Fundraising: - expand the donor base and develop new sources of funding for unrestricted gifts, scholarship, special projects, general endowment and major capital campaigns.
  • The Annual Fund – strategize with staff the timing and marketing approach that will meet the goals established by the Board of Directors for both restricted and unrestricted gifts.
  • Special Projects – research, write and strategize the proposals to Foundations for support of scholarship, endowment or other special purposes, including capital improvements.
  • Major Donors – work with the President and the Development Committee in cultivation and stewardship of major donors and selected Foundation directors.
  • Scholarship Funds – submit annual proposals to Foundations providing support for scholarship and prepares and submits reports on the uses of these funds in a timely manner.
  • Endowment – secure endowment gifts in accordance with the Endowment Policy of the school.
  • Events – coordinate an annual Golf Tournament for the Johansing Scholarship Fund and support the parent volunteers who organize and execute an annual GALA fundraising event each year.
  • Alumnae Relations – in collaboration with the President and the Director of Alumnae Relations, oversee an Alumnae Program that seeks to attract and involve alumnae in the successes of the school. The office collaborates with the Admissions Office on developing outreach that can benefit both the alumnae effort and the recruitment effort.
  • Print & Electronic Communications – oversee the production of the Annual Report, the quarterly View from the Top, the annual school Profile, the annual Family Roster, the occasional Alumnae Directory, the web site and the advertisements, invitations and other special brochures needed for Development and Admissions purposes.
  • Data Management & Gift Accountability – oversee the maintenance of addresses and segmented mailings for 5,200 and all gift accounting, pledge management and donor records that enable a donor-based development program.  The CDO oversees the effective operation of Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge database.
  • Donor Cultivation and Stewardship – develop and execute strategies for targeted outreach that cultivate, reward, and steward the donors to the school.

                    

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree req; advanced or professional degree and/or fundraising certificate preferred. 
  • 12+ years of proven and quantifiable record in fundraising experience, including capital campaigns and major gifts.
  • Ability to perform complex and/or multi-task assignments of support.
  • Personal integrity; high energy; effective communication with a passion for the mission. 
  • Successful supervisory experience motivating staff and volunteers.
  • Experience with a foundation and nonprofit board of directors is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with Word, Excel, Raisers Edge and Blackbaud fundraising software. 
  • A high capacity for attention to accuracy and detail. 
  • Strong management skills with a demonstrated ability to plan, organize, lead, and provide feedback to staff. 
  • Well-developed people and communication skills, suited to working effectively with a sophisticated Board, as part of a team of senior colleagues, and support staff.
